ART IN DALLAS

Dallas, Texas is the largest city in the state, and boasts the fourth highest metropolitan population in the entire country. They have the third-largest collection of Fortune 500 companies, and is a great transportation center, with numerous major highways surrounding it. It is well known for the various types of cuisine found within its limits, such as barbeque, Mexican and Tex-Mex. The frozen margarita started in Dallas.
The city is full of modern and post-modern buildings such as the Reunion Tower and Bank of America. A number of smaller buildings are in the Gothic Revival and Neoclassical style, as well. Each of Dallas' many city districts have a life and culture all their own, making the city an interesting and eclectic place to explore.

ART GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS
The Dallas Arts District features a collection of unique and varying venues of cultural, historical and architectural significance. The arts scene is not limited to this area however, and artistic and cultural hubs exist around the city.
- The Dallas Museum of Art features a collection of over 24000 art objects, and exhibits spanning centuries, from ancient to modern periods. The attached research library also holds more than 50,000 texts available to the public. Established in 1903, the extensive collection includes a wide selection of ancient Mediterranean, South Asian and European art. The museum is known for it's policies on exhibition, and its excellent educational programs.
- View works of art created by recent artists of the 19th, 20th and 21st century at the Pollock Gallery. Located on the grounds of the Meadows School of Art, the gallery shows student and faculty work, as well as pieces from up and comers in the local, national and international scenes. The Pollock prides itself on being a platform for discussion and ideas relating to all artistic periods, from ancient to modern day. Take in an exhibit, gallery talk or symposium.
- At the Nasher Sculpture Center, indoor and outdoor space is defined by an collection of more than 300 modern and contemporary sculptures. With original pieces by greats like Picasso, Rodin, and Miró, the center strives to be a site of study, conservation and exhibition of sculptural art. The museum opened in 2003 and is located within a 55,000 square foot building designed by award-winning architect Renzo Piano.
- If your artistic interest is focused across the pond, be sure to visit the Trammell & Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art, located in the Dallas Arts District. Open to the public since 1998, the museum features the extensive collection of travelling collectors Trammell and Margaret Crow. Works from China, India, Japan and elsewhere in Southeast Asian are featured at the 50-floor Trammell Crow Center Tower.
- Dallas Contemporary is an exhibition space in the Design District, which features the artwork of modern day artists. With graffitied walls, exposed ceiling structure and concrete floors, the contemporary space is ideal for large-scale artwork and conceptual creations. Lectures, educational programs, and events are held in the building, and admission to the various exhibits is free.

ARTISTIC INSTITIUTIONS
Dallas is home to a number of art colleges and schools that train passionate students in the study of a wide range of artistic mediums and professions.
- The Meadows School of Art offers students a chance to study in the artistic field to which they aspire. Their broad selection of degrees include art, art history, game development, photography and dance. With numerous galleries and studio spaces on the grounds, attendees are never lacking for inspiration.
- At the University of Texas at Dallas, the artistically inclined can further their skills in the areas of visual art, theatre, film studies and more. Located near ample green space and Cottonwood Creek, the school has been named the Southwest Center for Advanced Studies and offers over 133 academic programs.
- The Art Institute of Dallas offers programs in graphic design, fashion, photography and more in a hands-on environment that encourages creativity. Like-minded students inspire, and national qualifications allow graduates to pursue their dreams.

Dallas has birthed or adopted a number of well known creatives including artists, singers and actors.
- Kevin Page is an artist and actor who coined the phrase and art style New Pontillism.
- Gina Mayes is a Dallas-based multi-medium artist who creates colorful digital and hand-crafted images.
- Dallas is home to many anonymous graffiti artists, including Skillz, Mr and Cridic.
- Well known country singer LeAnn Rimes was born and raised near Dallas.
- Dramatic brothers Luke and Owen Wilson.

ART AND CULTURAL EVENTS
Annual Events
- Celebrating the motion arts since 1986, the Dallas VideoFest shows the film-work of artists from around the world, hosts panels and workshops, and encourages the participation of local artists. Held each October, the 10 day festival invites attendees to join with artists in various collaborations.
- Located in the district of the same name, the Deep Ellum Arts Festival is held each April, and is comprised of three days of 100s of visual artists showcasing and selling their wares, as well as many live bands, performance artists and local food and drink. Admission to the event is free.
- One of the staples of southwestern life, the State Fair of Texas draws millions of people from around North America. The nearly month long celebration has been running since 1886, and features a vast array of music, dance, performance, food and amusement park rides.
- The Out of the Loop Fringe Festival is a 10-day event that showcases the best of live theatre, dance, music and visual art. Travelling and local theatre troops alike perform their hearts out for small audiences and avid theatre goers. Begun in 2000, the festival is held in Addison, nearby Dallas.
